| This page provides information on the DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby. It is placed here for the purpose of helping interested youth from around the DuBois area with getting started in their first ‘never-to-be-forgotten’ Soap Box Derby experience. |

First …
The 2nd Annual renewed DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby race is scheduled for Saturday, June 19, 2010. There are three divisions in the race and a limited number of entrants for each division. It is best to sign up early so you will be guaranteed a slot in the race.

Late Registration is $40 per driver and remains open until all available racing slots are filled; no later than Saturday, February 27, 2010, at midnight.
A registration form can be found in the ‘Forms/Documents’ section of this website, or by clicking here. Please complete the form, sign it as indicated and mail it, along with a copy of your birth certificate and a $30 check, to our treasurer Roland Bechtel, 1573 Treasure Lake, DuBois, PA, 15801.
This is a summary of important local information on the Soap Box Derby, with more to be found here and on our local DuBois area website at www.dasbd.com A copy of the DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby bylaws, its sponsorship structure, and its officers are available on this website. Another good place to learn still more about Derby racing is the National and International website at www.aasbd.com.
Once you are notified your registration has been confirmed, you can purchase a car kit from the national All-American Soap Box Derby. All kits and parts for Soap Box Derby racing must be purchased through the national organization. The Online Store at the national website has all the information you need. The national Rule Book can also be downloaded for study and review. In order to participate in the DuBois area race you will need to obtain a car parts kit and a set of racing wheels for the division you would like to race in. |
Second …
Decide which type of car you wish to build, as follows:

The three types of cars will be explained in detail further in this information. Your final decision on the type of car you build will be determined by the ‘rule book’ and the ‘parameters of the race.’ Your registration confirmation will sanction the type of car, for which you will need to purchase a car kit. The car kit is purchased for the participant by the participant’s family or benefactor. The ownership of the car, after the race, normally resides with the participant and the participant’s family. The car will qualify for entry in subsequent All-American Soap Box Derby sanctioned races, and it may be sponsored by anyone providing donation to each subsequent racing event.
Each car must have a sponsor. The participant and the participant’s family may choose a sponsor, or request that a sponsor be assigned by local race officials. The sponsor is required to donate $150 to the DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby.
The Super Stock and the Masters cars can be painted, if you desire, or left unpainted. The Stock Car body shells come pre-colored. Each car will have a sponsor’s decal or other authorized decorative decals added to it, together with your name and car number if you would like.
Your finished car will go through inspection. Once passed inspection, we will impound the car on-site and later transport it to the ‘hill’ for you on race day morning.
Why do inspections? Inspections are mandated by the national headquarters in Akron. All of Akron's rules can be found in the rule books, which will be available on the www.aasbd.com website. You will have plenty of notice on any rule changes through newsletters and, especially, if you attend the car clinic in DuBois on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Attendance is mandatory for all first time racers. It is our goal to strive to keep our event safe, equitable and fun for all participants. Initial inspection is Saturday, May 22, 2010. There will be trial runs on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Final inspection and impounding is scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2010 |
Third …
You may want to look for a sponsor to help underwrite the cost of your racer. We can help. Contact us if you need to find this sort of sponsor. We call this type of sponsor a Corporate or a Shared sponsor. For more detail on sponsor categories you can go to the Sponsorships link on this website.
Corporate sponsors pledge to underwrite the entire cost of a car kit; and are asked to donate just $50 to the DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby. The subsequent ownership of the car, after the race, will reside with the SBD Committee, donated by the sponsor. The sponsor, however, may assist with the display and safe-keeping of the car and advise on its use by future race entrants. The initial assembly, repair and/or overhaul, finishing and command of the race car before and during each racing event shall be the responsibility of the assigned participant, with the aid, assistance and support of the participant’s family. Initial and replacement parts shall be provided by the initial sponsor. The car will qualify for entry in subsequent All-American Soap Box Derby sanctioned races. The car will remain sponsored by the initial sponsor. Additional donation will be necessary for all subsequent racing events and rallies. The sponsor shall choose or request the SBD Committee to assign a driver for the car at any subsequent racing event or rally.
Shared sponsors are expected to donate $100 and pledge to underwrite a part of the cost of a car kit. This is a partnership between the participant, the participant’s family, and an interested sponsor. The sponsor may be obtained by the participant, the participant’s family; or assigned by the Soap Box Derby Committee. The assembly, finishing and command of the race car before and during the race shall be the responsibility of the participant, with the aid, assistance and support of the participant’s family. The percentage of each partner’s expenses shall determine ownership or the subsequent right of possession, safe-keeping and/or disposition of the race car, after the race. Such ownership, or rights, shall reside with the member of the partnership having the greater amount of cash money donated or invested in the car; and shall be determined by the partners prior to the purchase and assembly of the car. The car will qualify for entry in the first and subsequent All-American Soap Box Derby sanctioned races as either an entrant’s Individual car or a Corporate car.
It is the intent of the DuBois Area All-American Soap Box Derby that an entrant, with the help of parents and family, enjoy the experience of assembling a car and having the entrant participating in the race; as opposed to owning a car, for which a sponsor has provided for more than half the cost of the parts. |
Fourth …
Read the official plans and build your car exactly as the instructions indicate. You should plan to attend a car-build clinic on Saturday, February 27, 2010. This clinic is intended to help you understand the regulations and guide you in building a safe and competitive car.
You will find a selection of racing tips and an explanation on how the DuBois area race is governed by going to the Newsletter link on this website. |
Finally …
You can expect to be asked to participate in a fund raiser and a raffle to support your local Derby, a newsletter, a website, a championship awards banquet – honoring all participants and their families – and other local events aimed at developing goodwill and camaraderie among the participants and their families from around the DuBois area. Please join the effort willingly and with enthusiasm. It’s all part of the Soap Box Derby experience. You can find out more by visiting the ‘What’s Up’ tab or Events Calendar link on this website.
In addition to racing in your local race, you may participate in rally races as well. You will gain experience and, with each trip down the hill, build the bond between driver and parent/guardian, and make new friends along the way. You can find out more about rally racing by going to the Rally Racing link on this website or the national website. |
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT RACING DIVISIONS?
Stock Division:
The Stock division is for racers age 8-13 years old. Stock cars can accommodate a racer up to (Approximately) 5' 3" tall and 125 pounds. The Stock car, a lean-forward design, is sold as a kit which includes everything needed for racing with the exception of Z-Glas racing wheels and weights. Because painting is not permitted on the Stock car shell, drivers have their choice of purchasing one of three colored shells: red, white or blue. Builders should allow 4-6 hours to assemble their Stock division car.
Super Stock Division:
The Super Stock division is designed for racers age 10-17 years old. Super Stock cars can accommodate a larger racer up to (Approximately) 6'0" tall and 150 pounds. The Super Stock, a lean-forward designed car, is also sold as a kit which includes everything needed for racing with the exception of Z-Glas racing wheels and weights. Builders should allow 4-6 hours to assemble their Super Stock division car.
Masters Division:
The Masters division (also known as Scottie) is for racers age 10-17 years old and is driven by the more experienced drivers. Masters cars can accommodate a child up to (Approximately) 6'0" tall and 160 pounds. Because of the lay-down (enclosed) design of the Masters car, small drivers are also competitive in this division. |
